RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS by Joline Godfrey

Book overview
Is your child a spendthrift? A hoarder? Or maybe, downright oblivious? Are there family money dramas you can do without? In RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS, Joline Godfrey, one of the country’s leading experts on kids, parents, and money, gives parents the secrets and knowledge she has gleaned from a decade of working with kids on financial literacy and business. At the heart of the book lies a defined set of values:Money is a tool for achieving and maintaining independence. Saving is good; accumulation for its own sake is not. Spending is best done wisely and within one’s means (though a bold purchase or investment may also be an act of wisdom). Greed is not good. Giving generously is part of one’s responsibility to the human family; shepherding wealth is an act of respect—to the past and the future. Money is an energy (not a commodity) that can be used for evil or for good.Designed for adults—parents, grandparents, mentors, advisors, and educators—concerned about raising children ages 5 to 18, RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS is centered around a developmental map covering ten specific money skills each child can master by the age of 18 to become a financially secure adult. This map gives parents a step-by-step approach to helping their kids become habitual savers, smart money mangers, and responsible decision makers. More than just a money book, RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS will help parents send their children into the world as balanced, financially stable individuals and contributing members of both their family and community.

Tylenol Recall

This doesn't appear to have a real threat but I decided to post it anyway since a lot of us have been and will be using this with cold and flu season already upon us.

Some infants' and children's Tylenol recalled

Thu, Sep 24, 2009 (Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson said on Thursday it is recalling some lots of infants' and children's Tylenol because of a possible bacterial contamination of the popular pain and fever treatment.
Tylenol products being recalled were manufactured between April and June 2008, the diversified healthcare giant said.
The company identified 21 varieties of the products, which come in various flavors and forms, and 57 different lot numbers, affected by the recall..
The company said it has contacted wholesalers and retailers about the recall, which affects only the United States. It was not immediately clear how widely distributed the 57 affected lots were within the United States.
In a letter dated September 18, J&J unit McNeil Consumer Healthcare said that after consulting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it initiated the voluntary recall as a precaution.
The company said that one of the inactive ingredients did not meet internal testing requirements and Burkholderia cepacia, or B. cepacia, bacteria were detected in a portion of raw material that was not used in the finished product.
"However, it was decided, as a precaution, to recall all product that utilized any of the raw material manufactured at the same time as the raw material that tested positive for the bacteria," the letter said, emphasizing that no bacteria were found in the finished product, which met all specifications.
J&J said the likelihood of a serious medical problem arising from the recalled product was remote.
"The FDA is working closely with the company to monitor this recall," agency spokeswoman Sandy Walsh said.
"There are no adverse events reported by patients using this product," she added.
Health consequences of B. cepacia infections could be severe in high-risk patients, such as those with underlying pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis or compromised immune systems.
Johnson & Johnson shares closed down 5 cents at $60.72 on the New York Stock Exchange.

After a long radio silence...

I hope you ladies are having a wonderful summer. It is flying by, isn't it? The leadership team held their first meeting on July 20. Below are some important points. I'll be adding more in the future too.

The Leadership Team:

We are still looking to fill a few spots on the leadership team. We are looking for individuals to assist The Prayer Team and the Craft Team. We are also looking for an Off-Week Coordinator and a Christmas Bazaar Coordinator. The Christmas Bazaar is vital to the success of JUMC MOPS. If you are interested, please contact April or Jen for more info.

MOPS Meetings:

Our first meeting will be September 15 at 9:30. We will be meeting for 3 weeks in a row and then have one week off. On the off week, we will schedule a play date of some sort so we can keep the momentum going.

Topics:

Here is a small sample of some of the topics we will cover.

Marriage and Family. We plan to have a marriage counselor come in to talk about various issues and answer questions. We would like to have a family therapist come in and talking about how to survive the holiday's/family gatherings.

Fitness and health: We plan to have a nutritionist, personal trainer and an OBGYN or midwife to come in to help us with our post-baby body and health concerns.

Kiddos: We also plan to have a child nutritionist and a child psychologist come in to talk to us and answer questions specifically related to the needs of our little ones.

The fun stuff: Of course there will be crafts, games, prizes, lots of chit-chat and family fun ideas.

Operation Christmas Child:

Because school supplies are so cheap right now, we will be launching operation Christmas child in the next few days to our existing members. Keep an eye out for a sign up list over email.

New Member Invitations:

If you plan on inviting a new member, and we hope all of you do, please send us their home address we will send them an invitation.

As always, if anyone has any questions or suggestions, you can always contact April or Jen.
